Can I Get Off Cable TV?

From the inception of household television until recent years, cable television was the best way to get quality shows geared toward specific audiences. As time has passed and cable television has become a staple in every household, cable companies have expanded their channel offerings and increased their prices. For a long time cable was widely accepted as the ultimate accessory for in-home entertainment. With the popularity and rise of the internet in the past twenty years cable companies now offer both broadband internet and cable television in packages. What the cable companies may not have anticipated is that the internet service that they provide to consumers may soon edge out the need for cable television. With the introduction of Sling TV in 2015, a new trend in the industry has grown steam: cable cutting.

Sling TV landed on the scene with the promise to be the Netflix of live television. Sling allows consumers to choose what channels they wish to stream over the internet to their computer, cell phone, or television for a monthly fee. In time, Sling TV has inspired several other live streaming services such as Playstation VUE and DirecTV Now. Streaming services that do not yet offer live streaming such as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime Video are also massively popular with consumers. In early 2017 Hulu announced that they are also gearing up to release a sports-centric live streaming option in the upcoming months with a small cloud-based DVR included.

As the interest in cable cutting rises, the inclusion of DVR with these live streaming services is also expanding. Hulu’s offering looks promising, but other streaming services are racing to beat Hulu in the DVR game. DirecTV Now offers up to 120 live streaming internet-based channels with the plan to introduce DVR functionality this year. Sling is currently beta testing their version of the DVR program, while Playstation VUE currently has its own DVR feature. With the inclusion of DVR to the live streaming channels, there is a likelihood that streaming live television could replace cable television entirely in the future.

The year 2017 promises to bring big changes to the cable cutting arena. With the inclusion of live sports and DVR, there is no risk of missing out on the programming that matters to you most. Whether you are a cinemaphile, sports fanatic or television fan there are choices out there for you. If you have a broadband internet connection and the proper equipment for live streaming cable cutting may be worth your consideration. With the rise of internet equipped smart TVs and streaming devices such as Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Google Chromecast the ability to pick and choose how and what you watch on television is greater than ever. With the increasing availability of live streaming television, it may be possible to say goodbye to cable TV forever.
